The 8 Tones Series

The Eight Tones concert series invited renowned Asian and Western musicians to explore the sounds and colors of instruments composed of silk, bamboo, wood, metal, clay, gourd or hide channelled through contemporary works by Chinese composers. The Eight Tones is an ancient classification system for Chinese instruments. In Chinese music, the single tone is of greater significance than the melody. The tone is an attribute of the substance that produces it, hence the ancient musical instruments were categorized into eight tone classes based on their construction materials.
